As a charity we have provided scissors and other instruments to our Ugandan colleagues to allow them to tackle more difficult cases. Scissors sound a minor point but fistula surgery involves careful dissection and cutting through very tough tissues. Trying this with blunt and cheap scissors is difficult if not impossible. As you can see these scissors are very very sharp and last a long time. They’re made of top quality Swedish steel and are expensive at around £400 each but worth every penny to a fistula surgeon faced with a difficult case. In the hands of Dr Matovu and his colleagues they are used on 100s of patients every year and can help cure very many grateful women.
